MYP Term 1 Week 3 Blog

Year 7&8 Weekly Blog

Notice

Please be aware that beginning next week the Year 7/8 children will begin their swimming lessons with Mr. Xavi. Swimming classes will be held every Wednesday. Mr. Xavi will continue to monitor the weather and water temperature to ensure the water is not too cold for the children to enter the pool. Should it be too cold then the children will carry on with regular PE lessons for the day. Please ensure that your child brings their swimsuit, towel, googles, and swimming cap with them every Wednesday.

Language & Literature

This week in Language and Literature class the learners have worked on their communication skills. The children have been exploring how television works and and finding facts on how it has evolved over time to communicate messages and programs from around the world. As part of their reading the learners will be focusing their attention on reading a memoir/biography. This week they began reading "The Diary of a Young Girl" by Anne Frank. For next week the children will be learning about film making, documentaries and news reporting.

Individuals & Society

This week in our Individuals & Society the learners worked on exploring the consequences of plastic in the oceans. The children also took part in an environmental case study on deforestation and what consequences it has on the water cycle.  For next week the learners will be learning about Human Rights.

Maths

MYP students continue to hone their math skills this week by practicing operations with fractions, decimals and percentages. Students have completed an assessment test in order to better provide them with structured activities that will build on their prior knowledge. Students will be introduced to the distributive property and the concept of variables next week.

Science

This week students have been carrying out an experiment to investigate the ability of different materials to protect eggs from cracking. To everyone's surprise, all of our chosen materials designs protected the eggs up to a 3.5 meter drop. Students will need to redesign the experiment to extend the range of the drop. After the experimental data is collected, the students will graph their data and summarise their findings.

Homework

Each MYP classroom teacher will be assigning their homework via Google Classroom. The children should be reading at least 15 pages per day from "The Diary of a Young Girl" by Anne Frank. EAL learners will have their own reading to do from Ms. Liza.

Dr. Lindsay will welcome all parents in the school auditorium before we move into the Year 7/8 classroom for the remainder of the meeting. During this meeting parents will have the opportunity to learn a little more about the MY Programme, class schedule and time to asks any questions they have. We look forward to seeing you all next week during this meeting.

Language & Literature

This week in Language and Literature class the learners have worked on their collaboration skills. The children have be brainstorming about their statement of inquiry relating to film creation and Television genres. The learners have also been learning about how TV programs are categorised into different genres.  For next week the learners will be working on their communication skills and be discussing "Why people watch television?"

This week in our Individuals & Society class the learners worked on several activities. The children also learned about different forms of human achievement over history. For next week the learners will begin researching and discussing what some of the global issues the world is facing today.

Maths

Students are continuing to practice order of operations expressions. It is important that they become proficient and master their skills in simplifying fractions, solving equations with decimals, square roots, powers and negative integers. Following a daily introduction of a skill set, the focus for this week has been to address students' individual levels of proficiency by providing individual instruction and guidance.

Science

This week, learners are developing a plan to investigate how different materials can protect an egg from cracking. Students will need to determine the variables involved, design a scientific method and select the appropriate tools and materials. We will also discuss how best to provide a fair test.

Next week, the students will carry out the egg test experiment. Students will collect and record the data in order to determine which material is best for protecting an egg.

Homework

Each MYP classroom teacher will be assigning homework via Google Classroom each week. This will allow us to manage the homework completion, set deadlines and give valuable feedback to each individual learner. As always the children should also be reading for a minimum of 20 minutes each day. The children always have access to our MYP library resources and are free to check books out daily or as needed.

MYP Term 1 Week 1 Blog

Welcome to the MYP

I would like to welcome you all back to UDIS for the 2020/2021 academic school year. We have had a very successful week and the learners have settled in well in the MYP. The learners are very excited about having many different classrooms from which they will now be learning in.

Language & Literature

This week in Language and Literature class the learners have worked on their essential agreements that will be put in place for Term 1. The learners also worked on writing letters to their mother in honour of Mother's Day. The learners took the time to become familiar with the Reading A-Z levelled readers that we have available in our MYP study room as well as the Reading Eggspress website to build fluency. The children are welcome to checkout any of the Reading A-Z levelled readers as frequent as they would like to in order to build their reading comprehension and fluency skills while at home.

Individuals & Society

This week in our Individuals & Society class the learners began learning about what it means to be a global citizen. For unit one the learners will be learning about the importance of globalisation and how people from around the world must work together to exchange goods and services to produce a thriving community.

Maths

Students are learning about the five number systems and the order of mathematical operations. Students are reflecting on the uses of math in their lives and how math is useful for determining fairness and equity in exchanges. Learners are reviewing prior knowledge in order to build a solid foundation for acquiring new concepts.

Science

This week MYP 1 class has been exploring their interests in science and learning about what scientists do. Students have also been investigating and evaluating questions related to so called "super foods" and the actual nutritional content in food products. Students are preparing to model the experimental method by identifying different variables in an inquiry question.

Homework

For the purposes of homework this academic year we will be using Google Classroom as our platform to assign any homework to the MYP learners for each designated class they attend. This will allow us to manage the homework completion, set deadlines and give valuable feedback to each individual learner. We will begin assigning homework after Week 2 to allow time for the learners to get settled after being out of school for several months for virtual learning and to allow them to adapt well to MYP. However, the children should be reading for a minimum of 20 minutes per evening to enhance their vocabulary skills, reading comprehension skills and fluency skills.
