Term 1 Week 8 Blog

Year 7&8 Weekly Blog

Language & Literature

This week in Language and Literature class the learners have worked on exploring, analysing, and identifying different styles of poems and play scripts from the Elizabethan Era. In preparation for "Library Month" the MYP learners and Student Council have been preparing reading videos for the EY children. The older children have selected short stories that they will record as they read so that we can share them with the EY learners. For next week the children will be exploring what a "Sonnet" in poetry is and why Shakespeare used certain themes for his poetry and plays.

Individuals & Society

For this week the learners have been introduced to our Unit 2 Statement of Inquiry:"Belief systems provide guidance to people in different ways and can shape personal identity and culture". The children were also introduced to the 5 major religious of the world. For next week we will begin exploring more closely one of the major religions more closely. We hope to have some guest speakers during this unit so they can share first hand knowledge of their religion with the children. This will help the learners have a better understanding of how the religions are similar in certain ways and different in other ways.

Maths

In this second unit, MYP 1 students are studying the principles of elementary algebra that will help them improve their ability in identifying and using patterns and rules to understand relationships, in life and in science. Students will learn to solve equations with unknowns and graph the result of linear and quadratic equations.

Science

Students are enjoying the new laboratory as we are now using the lab for weekly practicals. Our most recent lab activity involved observing the effects of changes of state for various compounds, graphing the results of a time-temperature curve, and observing a non-Newtonian fluid that behaves like both a solid and a liquid. Our next concept will involve learning about and separating solutions, suspensions and mixtures.

Homework

Each MYP classroom teacher will be assigning their homework via Google Classroom. The children should be reading for at least 20 minutes per day. The learners should continue to complete any incomplete classwork for homework and submit it via Google Classroom in order to receive teacher feedback. EAL learners will have their own reading to do from Ms. Liza.
