Term 1 Week 15 Blog

Year 7&8 Weekly Blog

Parent Notice:

Dear parents and learners,

This year we will be hosting the parents conferences for the MY learners using a different format than what has been used in the past for PY. The MY parent conference will be held on Thursday, December 3rd during 6th & 7th period (1:15-2:45). This conference will be held in the Year 7/8 homeroom classroom. I will set up tables and chairs between the two classrooms as well as have different places for teachers to meet with any parents after the student led conference is completed should the parents wish to speak to any teachers individually.

This will be run as a student-led conference where the learners will be sharing their portfolios and examples of their work with their parents. As the children complete their student led conferences with their parents the MY teachers will be available to meet individually with any parents who would like to meet to discuss their child's report. Using this new format will allow all MY teachers to be available for the parents and allow us to complete the conferences efficiently in one afternoon.

Once the student-led conferences are completed and parents have met with the teachers they wanted to meet with they are free to take their child home with them. If you have any questions or concerns please let Mr. Mark or Mr. Golf know.

Open House

UDIS will hold a school open house on Friday 4 December from 8:30am to 10:30am. This will be run by leadership and services in the Auditorium. Any parents who are interested in joining this event are welcome to attend. Parents are also encouraged to invite their friends and any family members along to find out more about the school.

Language & Literature

This week in Language and Literature class the learners began Unit 3 about myths and legends and why they are used in society. The children were also assigned their 2nd reading novel called: The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill. The children should read at least 15 pages per day so that we can keep on target to complete this book by the end of Unit 3. For next week, the learners will be learning about mythical creatures and why they are used in telling stories.

Individuals & Society

For this week the children have been introduced to our Statement of Inquiry for Unit 3; "Civilisations have developed at different times and locations bringing about change and innovation that often influence how we view them today." The learners discussed any prior knowledge that they had of past civilisations throughout history. For next week, the learners will be exploring how society is able to learn about past civilisations and how artefacts and drawing were used to document history of the past.

Maths

In math class students are developing an understanding of how to add and subtract polynomials by combining like terms using shapes to represent the different terms. As students begin the next unit, they will continue to practice solving equations and apply their skills to explore how graphs and algebra equations are used to better understand and visualize trends in grouped data sets.

Science

Students have completed the separation of a solids mixture lab this week and will complete one additional materials lab next week studying separation of a mixture by distillation. Our next unit will involve students learning about the characteristics of living organisms and how living organisms work.

Homework

Each MYP classroom teacher will be assigning their homework via Google Classroom. The children should be reading for at least 20 minutes per day. The learners should continue to complete any incomplete classwork for homework and submit it via Google Classroom in order to receive teacher feedback. EAL learners will have their own reading to do from Ms. Liza.
