Term 1 Week 13 Blog

Year 7&8 Weekly Blog

Parent Notice:

Dear parents and learners,

This year we will be hosting the parents conferences for the MY learners using a different format than what has been used in the past for PY. The MY parent conference will be held on Thursday, December 3rd during 6th & 7th period (1:15-2:45). This conference will be held in the Year 7/8 homeroom classroom. I will set up tables and chairs between the two classrooms as well as have different places for teachers to meet with any parents after the student led conference is completed should the parents wish to speak to any teachers individually.

This will be run as a student-led conference where the learners will be sharing their portfolios and examples of their work with their parents. As the children complete their student led conferences with their parents the MY teachers will be available to meet individually with any parents who would like to meet to discuss their child's report. Using this new format will allow all MY teachers to be available for the parents and allow us to complete the conferences efficiently in one afternoon.

Once the student-led conferences are completed and parents have met with the teachers they wanted to meet with they are free to take their child home with them. If you have any questions or concerns please let Mr. Mark or Mr. Golf know.

Language & Literature

This week in Language and Literature class the learners have worked on a cumulative review and taking their Term 1 Summative Assessments. For next week the children will be wrapping up their unit on poetry and William Shakespeare.

Individuals & Society

For this week the children have been brainstorming how to write their argumentative essay. This was in preparation for their summative assessment that they took on Thursday. For next week the children will be wrapping up their unit on world religions and writing their final reflections for this unit.

Maths

Students are reviewing for their math assessment on Friday. For the remainder of this unit, students will continue to explore the concepts of introductory algebra as they refine their skills in numeracy. Students will also explore the historical context of algebra when they investigate the question of who and when was algebra discovered.

Science

Students have recently completed their science assessment that involved outlining a procedure for  separating a mixture of salt, iron powder and sand. They also completed an assignment identifying the key discoveries of a scientist of their choosing. Next week students will begin an experiment using chromatography to separate various compounds in a liquid mixture.

Homework

Each MYP classroom teacher will be assigning their homework via Google Classroom. The children should be reading for at least 20 minutes per day. The learners should continue to complete any incomplete classwork for homework and submit it via Google Classroom in order to receive teacher feedback. EAL learners will have their own reading to do from Ms. Liza.
