Term 1 Week 11 Blog

 Year 7&8 Weekly Blog

Language & Literature

This week in Language and Literature class the learners have worked on writing a persuasive speech. The learners have analysed a speech from the play "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare. For next week the children will be exploring some famous scenes from Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare and reflecting on the impact that the scene had on them.

Individuals & Society

For this week the children have been learning about the religion of Hinduism and who Mahatma Gandi was. The children also began exploring Christianity and what the Protestant Reformation was. For next week the learners will continue to explore Christianity before learning about indigenous religious beliefs.

Maths

Students have been working on building their skills in solving equations with one variable. This next week students will focus on addressing any gaps in their abilities to master numerical skills and continue to build on their understanding of algebra equations involving fractions. The aims are to review and master the fundamentals for the upcoming assessment week.

Science

Science students are developing a greater understanding of the natural world by applying their growing knowledge and abilities to hands on activities in the lab. Although identifying the relevant variables and controls using the scientific method are complex and take time to develop, students have a discovered important principles by investigation. One principle that was noted by a students during an experiment was how temperature affects solubility.

Homework

Each MYP classroom teacher will be assigning their homework via Google Classroom. The children should be reading for at least 20 minutes per day. The learners should continue to complete any incomplete classwork for homework and submit it via Google Classroom in order to receive teacher feedback. EAL learners will have their own reading to do from Ms. Liza.

Term 1 Week 10 Blog

Year 7&8 Weekly Blog

 Parent Notice
Dear parents and learners,

Please be aware that tomorrow Friday, October 23rd there will be no school in honour of Chulalongkorn Day. Also next Thursday, October 29th the school will be celebrating Loy Krathong and the children will be making Krathong's in class for this ceremony. On Friday, October 30th the children are welcome to come to school dressed in any Halloween costumes if they would like to.

Language & Literature

This week in Language and Literature class the learners have worked on their summative assessment activity. The children were required to pick one topic that they wanted to focus on and write their sonnet as part of our unit on poetry. The children understand their sonnets must include exactly 14 lines with each line containing 10 syllables and follow a rhyming pattern. For next week the children will be working on their 1/2 term writing samples and will also be writing a speech.

Individuals & Society

For this week the children have been learning about the Islamic religion and  have analysed what the "Five Pillars of Islam" are. The children also learned a little bit about Sharia Law that is still being practiced in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and in Brunei. For next week the learners will begin exploring the religion of Hinduism.

Maths

Students will continue to explore the rules of algebra to identify patterns using models, rules and statements. A continued emphasis on real world word problems this week will challenge students to improve their skills in solving for unknown values in geometry.

Science

Students are continuing to prepare for a series of experiments that will be carried out investigating mixtures of materials. Lab groups will identify the solubility of various compounds or determine the amount of carbon dioxide in soft drinks. Identifying the variables involved and designing a method to collect results is challenging, but the students are persevering and looking forward to setting up their activities and equipment in the lab.

Liza.

Term 1 Week 9 Blog

 Year 7&8 Weekly Blog

 Parent Notice
Dear parents and learners,

Please be aware that next week UDIS will be on half term break. The school will be closed from October 10th until October 19th. All children will return back to school on Tuesday, October 20th to begin the second half of Term 1. Have a wonderful and restful half term break!

Language & Literature

This week in Language and Literature class the learners have worked on exploring, analysing, and identifying what iambic pentameter is (the use of 10 syllables in a poem line). The children also read a sonnet by William Shakespeare to understand how a sonnet is developed. The children also explored how the characters of women played an important role in Shakespeare's plays and poems. Once we return from half term break the children will begin learning about speeches and how Shakespeare used speech in his play "Hamlet".

Individuals & Society

For this week the learners have been introduced to the different concepts that are practiced in the Buddhist religion. The children learned about "The Four Noble Truths", "The Noble Eightfold Path" and "The Wheel of Life". Once we return from half term break we will begin exploring the Islamic religion and analyse what the "Five Pillars of Islam" are.

Maths

Students have been engaged with solving problems with unknown values using the numerical skills they have been developing in the first unit and applying them to simplify algebraic expressions. Linear equations and the concept of functions were introduced to demonstrate how an algebraic equation can generate a line on a Cartesian coordinate graph. This concept will also be useful in science for displaying and understanding the results of an experiment.

Science

Students are learning about solubility and how the physical properties of different compounds affect their ability to dissolve in various solutions. Students will pair up to choose and design an investigation that involves calculating the amount of carbon dioxide in a soft drink or the solubility of various compounds in chocolate milk. After completing the preliminary design, the students will conduct the experiments and present their results.

Liza.
